Award for best Pantomime! - 13 April 2016
On Sunday 3rd April 2016 our Chairman, Nigel Chenery accompanied by Fi and
Lyn Mc Martin attended the NODA East Region Awards for 2015 in St Ives. It
was important we had a presence at the awards as we had been short listed in
the category for Best Pantomime in the District for Dick Whittington and his
Cat. After a few hours and a very nice lunch it was announced that we had in
fact won this Category. Nigel was delighted to collect the certificate with
Fi (the pantomime choreographer) on behalf of FMT and all who were involved
in the Pantomime. So well done to everyone involved. A great team effort!

Very sad news, The Spa Pavilion has closed - 06 January 2013

Felixstowe Spa Pavilion closes after final Aladdin show - BBC News Article

The curtain will come down for the final time later on a 100-year-old Suffolk theatre staging its last production.

The Felixstowe Spa Pavilion will close after the final performance of Aladdin on Sunday night.

The council ended its subsidy and a buyer has not yet come forward.

Manager Julie Howes said she "hoped it wouldn't come to this" but it was a credit to staff that they wanted to see it through to the end.

"They've all given so much to this venue and they wanted to be here right until the last day," she added.

"They really are a superb bunch of people."

Without the £250,000 subsidy from Suffolk Coastal District Council, the theatre could not carry on.

'Good crowd'
Geoff Holdcroft, cabinet member for leisure, said it conducted a review in October 2011 and decided it did not have the money to support the Spa Pavilion in its current format.

"They've got 35,000 people coming though the doors in a year, that compares to 90,000 in Cromer, 160,00 at the Regent in Ipswich," he said.

"It just doesn't compare."

The Spa Pavilion opened in June 1909, with flags put up around Felixstowe to celebrate the opening of a new venue for the east coast.

Folk musician Charlie Landsborough, who has performed at the theatre many times, said it would be sadly missed.

"I'm as sick as everyone else," he said. "It was always a place we always looked forward to playing, the staff there were fantastic.

"The theatre had a great ethos about it and we always got a good crowd."

It has also hosted several theatre shows for BBC Radio Suffolk.

All 43 staff have been made redundant.

The final show is the 47th pantomime staged at the venue by the Dennis Lowe Theatre Company - named after its founder who died in 1999.

Suzie Lowe, his daughter and current director of the company, told the BBC in December that the show would ensure the theatre "went out with a bang".

Have you got your tickets yet? We are on in the Spa 23rd, 24th and 25th Nov!! - 17 November 2012
Felixstowe Star article by Matt Bunn - 14 November 2012

Theatre group boss fears for town’s young performers if Spa closes.

BOSSES at a Felixstowe theatre group today spoke of their fear for aspiring young performers in the resort if the Spa Pavilion closes.

Members of the Felixstowe Musical Theatre group, which has been entertaining audiences at the Spa for more than half a century, is preparing for what could potentially be their last ever show at the venue next week.

The group are expecting big crowds for their performance of Alice in Wonderland - A Rock ‘n’ Roll Pantomime – but they fear they will need to search for a new theatre at the end of the show.

The group’s business manager, Kelly Crane, said: “Felixstowe Musical Theatre has been doing shows at the Spa for 60 odd years so it could possibly be our last show there.

“We don’t really know what is going to happen and whether the Spa is going to be saved.

“We have got to look at other venues unfortunately – it’s sad but what can we do?”

This year’s show is expected to see about 40 cast members perform but in recent years, the group has boasted cast numbers as high as 100.

A high number of youngsters have also been a part of the club over the years. Ms Crane believes it is the young people of Felixstowe who will be hit hardest by the closure.

She added: “So many children go through that theatre and it’s a lovely pastime for them. It keeps them off the street and, for some of them, leads to a career.

“They do things in school but it’s just tragic for them that the Spa is going to close.”

Alice in Wonderland – a Rock ‘n’ Roll pantomime - can be seen at the Spa Pavilion from November 23-25.

For tickets, call the Spa Pavilion box office by calling 01394 282126.

Monday 16 July

Once the chorus auditions have been completed, everyone apart from those on the audition panel will be asked to leave so that decisions can be made.

"Annie" - Review by Ipswich Star - 20 June 2012

Big cast musicals are what suit the space at the Spa best – and there doesn’t come a much bigger one than this, based on the American 30s cartoon Little Orphan Annie.

It’s a chance to fill the stage with adorable kids as well as plenty of adult chorus; and in this FMT, with director Michael Crane, came right up to the mark.In a bold, colourful, well choreographed production this whole company was a delight to watch.

The story starts in a New York orphanage with a whole bunch of cute little girls whose opening number, It’s a hard knock life, set the standard for the rest of the evening.
Miss Hannigan, who runs the orphanage, is a beautiful part - in a way she is a softer, drunker, more comic version of Cruella de Ville and this was skilfully portrayed by a very confident Jacki Williamson.

The show hangs on having a strong young actress for the central lead and in this Aimee Butcher excelled – perfect to look at with a lovely voice and fantastic stage presence this was a performance to savour.

I always imagine Daddy Warbucks as a larger than life figure; Chris Branch played him much more low key but was strong enough in the role, if a bit lacking in physical stage presence.
Sally Branch as Grace the secretary was a good support and David Crane and Lottie Hicks a nice double act as Rooster and his gal.

The rest of the cast did a superb job filling in a multitude of character and chorus parts with good voices and well directed chorus numbers. Especially noteworthy was Martyn Chenery in the role of President Roosevelt.

The pace moved on with the story – and there were some nice moments – especially in the orphanage - as well as big climax numbers.

It was good to hear a live talented orchestra accompanying the show, musical director Natasha Free did a superb job keeping it all together and well done to the stage crew – the scene changes were handled very slickly with nice backdrops and well chosen props.

Although some might say you can’t go wrong with a show involving lots of delightful children and a cute dog – there is a lot of difference between a good show and a great one. This was a joy throughout and FMT deserve to be congratulated.

"Annie" - Review by Ipswich 24 - 20 June 2012

It’s often said that working with children and adults is a recipe for disaster, but that certainly isn’t the case with Felixstowe Musical Theatre’s latest offering, Annie.

Annie is a familiar story to most, it tells the tale of an orphan searching for her parents who left her with a note saying they would be back for her one day. The part of Annie is made for Aimee Butcher, the talented young actress plays the lead role superbly, Aimee surely is a star of the future.

From the opening scene in the Orphanage and the rousing tune of ‘Hard Knock Life’ coupled with a brilliantly choreographed dance routine by the younger members of the ensemble, FMT’s performance could rival some more professional productions.

Although Annie (Amiee Butcher) is of course the star if the show, Sally Branch as Grace Farrell and Chris Branch as Oliver Warbucks also deserve a mention, as does Jacki Williamson’s portrayal of Mrs Hannigan which was just brilliant – even despite the odd prop mishap!

Overall FMT’s production of Annie works well, all performances from the cast were strong – and all managed to keep the American accent throughout.

And as for working with animals – well, Poppy as Annie’s canine friend Sandy was well cast and poppy was beautifully behaved, even when the audience erupted into applause at the end of the show!

"Annie" - Review by Giles Meehan - 15 June 2012

Annie must have been about the only household name musical that I had never seen before - not even the film! But following several excellent productions by Felixstowe Musical Theatre in recent years, I was looking forward to this opening night, and I was definitely not disappointed!

From the first line of her first song, Aimee Butcher as Annie sent shivers down the audience's spines. She is a talented singer with a beautiful voice, but she also communicates Annie's personality, thoughts and emotions perfectly, through her songs, dialogue and acting, every moment that she is onstage.

All of the other children in the orphanage are fantastic too, and the catchy "Hard Knock Life" is choreographed and performed brilliantly and with stacks of attitude - again every girl completely in their own character and interacting with each other. Their reprise of "You're Not Fully Dressed Without A Smile" is another highlight, full of energy. The "scruffy orphan" hair, all transformed later for the posh party, is very effective and is definitely worth all the effort!

Jacki Williamson really shines as Miss Hannigan, the owner of the orphanage, who likes a drink rather more than she likes her girls. She has excellent facial expressions and tones of voice, especially in "Little Girls", where she tries to dominate the children but always ends up being flustered by them.

Chris Branch is a very suave but human and not just two-dimensional Oliver Warbucks, the millionaire (sorry, billionaire) who offers an orphan to spend the Christmas holidays in his plush mansion. All the set dressing and props and costumes are very good, although personally I really would have liked a chandelier in there! Mr Warbucks and Annie have a very good rapport onstage, and a good sense of timing and gentle humour, for example when he explains that he made a promise to himself that he was going to be very rich, and she suggests, "That was a good idea!" His duet with Annie "I Don't Need Anything But You" is a lovely piece and great fun!

Sally Branch also gives a very strong performance, as Warbucks' efficient but very compassionate P.A., with very clear speech and a good singing voice. David Crane is really in his element giving a great rendition of "Easy Street" as Rooster. FMT newcomer Lottie Hicks is very good and full of character as Lily St Regis, and seemed to grow in confidence through the opening night - maybe through the rest of the run she could let herself go just a tiny bit more, still without going "over the top".

Sian Bartlett deserves a special mention for her wonderfully convincing and cheeky appearance as a ventriloquist's dummy, and there were also good character parts from Mark Falco, and Martyn Chenery as President Roosevelt, - and of course Poppy the dog!

The Chorus work hard, adding a lot of colour and movement. The ensemble singing in the party scene is particularly good, and in the curtain call. "NYC" shows off some good dancing, and a sassy solo by Kellyanne Crane. The servants' "ballet" is also well executed, and the Cabinet Room version of "Tomorrow" is a really uplifting moment.

"Annie" - Review by Glen Pearce - 15 June 2012

Never work with Children or animals, the showbiz saying goes. Felixstowe Musical Theatre throws caution to the wind and stage a show featuring both.

Charles Strouse’s 1977 musical, Annie, may pack in plenty of razzmatazz show stoppers but it doesn’t shy away from tackling the bigger issues as well. Poverty, abuse and orphanage life not being the usual subjects when thinking of a family musical.

It’s a challenge the company never shies away from but without forgetting the humour that’s prevalent in Martin Charnin’s lyrics. The required big song and dance numbers are there but there’s also moments when the show focuses down on the inner feelings of an eleven-year-old coming to terms with her abandonment.

That shift in mood is a tough call for any actress but young Aimee Butcher in the title role takes it all in her stride. Combining both a cheeky rebelliousness with an inner hurt, Butcher captures Annie perfectly.

Of course, sadly Annie isn’t the only girl in the orphanage and the young company of supporting actresses have great fun in the energetic chorus numbers with buckets and mops being wielded with fervour in Hard Knock Life.

While the children of course steal the show, let’s not forget the adults. Chris Branch’s Oliver Warbucks captures the slow thaw of steely businessman to adoptive father figure well while Sally Branch also impresses as Warbucks’ secretary Grace.

No musical comedy would be complete without its villains and Jacki Williamson’s Miss Hannigan nearly elicts sympathy for having to deal with her girls before she conspires with her shady brother Rooster (David Crane) and his latest girlfriend Lily St. Regis (Lottie Hicks).

On opening night there was a need for a bit more pace and attack in some sections and the staging, while managing to convey the shifting locations well, does tend to slow down flow with some slow and cumbersome scene transitions.

If the company can overcome these small issues then the future looks as bright as Annie’s. With the current gloomy weather, any show that promises the sun will come out tomorrow has to be welcome.

Ipswich 24 - Article "Felixstowe Musical Theatre present Annie" - 06 June 2012

6 June 2012

The award winning Felixstowe Musical Theatre are back this summer with an amazing production of the all time classic ‘Annie’.

Set in New York in the 30′s, Annie lives in an orphanage run by Miss Hannigan who is a sleazy, fairly unpleasant character. Annie was left as a baby with a letter saying her parents would return for her one day, and the thought of this keeps her going! However sometimes she runs away to try and find them for herself.

One day after escaping for a while, and finding a dog, she is returned by a policeman and is about to be punished by Miss Hannigan when Grace Farrell arrives. She is the secretary to Mr. Warbucks the millionaire. He wishes to give an orphan a holiday in his grand home for Christmas, and Grace chooses Annie.

Annie is immediately loved by everyone, including Warbucks, who asks her if she would like to be adopted by him. Although Annie tells him she would love to stay she is waiting to be reunited with her real mother and father. Warbucks then tries to help Annie find her parents by offering a reward for them to come forward.

When Miss Hannigan hears of this she hatches a plan with her brother Rooster, who is a rogue, and he, along with his girlfriend Lily, pretend to be Annie’s long lost parents. However their plan is foiled and of course Annie ends up living happily ever after with Warbucks (having eventually found out that her real parents had died many years before).

With world renowned songs such as ‘Tomorrow’, Hard knock Life’ and ‘ Fully Dressed’ this production promises to have something in it for everyone and will be a fantastic few hours entertainment for all the family.

A wonderful article in the Ipswich Star about our props lady Sue - 19 May 2012

Mrs Prop Sue Simmons has everything from a toy rat to a vintage carrier bag in her store cupboard.

As soon as you walk in to her house you can’t help but spot a period truncheon and a carpet beater hanging on the wall.

On the window sill are a soda siphon and a rat – a toy one – in a plastic bag.

For Sue Simmons, bizarre objects are a way of life and a hobby that has taken over her Felixstowe home.

She said the hobby began in 1997 when she was still working as a health visitor.

She said: “We had a family bereavement and I got into it through a colleague who was doing props for Me And My Girl at the Ipswich Regent. She thought I needed something else to focus on and she was right, it really helped.”

We are looking for a dog to be our "Sandy" in Annie - 15 May 2012

The dog would need to be available for rehearsals at the Trimley Welcome Hall Monday and Thursday evenings until the show and would need to be available for the entire week from 11 June at the Spa. We would preferably like quite a large and scruffy dog and of a pale colour as he is named Sandy by Annie! It will be in 2 scenes in the first half and possibly in the Finale.

Felixstowe Musical Theatre proudly present The Sound of Music directed by Michael Crane.

This was the final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein and is based on the true story of the Trapp Family Singers.

A young nun proves too high- spirited for the religious life of an Austrian convent and is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain. Life is disrupted however, when the Captain receives a telegram by the Third Reich to serve in its navy.

Show dates are 7-10 December at 7.30pm with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.

Come to see the Wonderful Wizard! (FMT) – Review by www.felixstowenews.tv - 17 June 2011

Felixstowe Musical Theatre’s fantastic and fantastical production of the well-loved Wizard of Oz draws you into a magical, wonderful world. The show is fast moving and perfectly “over the top”. The colourful costumes and make-up, sets, sound effects, snow (!) and lighting are all spot on.

The story is the same as the 1939 MGM film, so you can look forward to all your favourite songs, including Over the Rainbow, and Ding Dong! the Witch is Dead.

The whole show is very well staged, lively and fun, as always by director Sonya Taylor. The dancers, choreographed by Amanda Bond, are truly excellent, as are the children’s chorus, choreographed by Jacki Williamson. The singing and music, under musical director Natasha Free, are also very strong all the way through.

Particular highlights are the munchkins and flowers, the scarecrow dance, the jitterbug and ice ballet, and of course the many reprises of ‘We’re off to see the Wizard’.

Gemma Dixon is a very good Dorothy, suitably full of “wide eyed wonder”, and her three companions, David Crane (Scarecrow), Nigel Chenery (Tinman) and Martyn Chenery (Lion), are great in their characters. Kellyanne Crane makes a brilliant and absolutely authentic Wicked Witch (which I’m sure must take a lot of acting!!), well supported by her witch friends and skeleton. Jim Wearne is awesome and rather terrifying (to start with) as the Wizard, and Mark Falco provides some excellent comedy in character as the Munchkin Mayor. The whole of the rest of the talented cast really are very good too, including the delightful Sorceress, Melanie Peck, and special mention to Ellena Bacon as Gloria, for her ‘Merry Old Land of Oz’ solo.

This lovely show is great for children and for everyone – so if you’ve got the magic of Oz in your heart, then do see it today or tomorrow!

Felixstowe Musical Theatre (FMT) presents The Wizard of Oz at The Spa Pavilion Theatre, Felixstowe, Thursday 16th – Saturday 18th June 2011 at 7:30pm and a 2:30pm matinee on Saturday. Spa Pavilion Theatre box office tel: 01394 282126

I just wanted to congratulate you all on a wonderful performance last night. - 17 June 2011

A really lovely feel good show that had me smiling throughout.

So many really lovely characters in the show, my favourites being the white sorceress (slightly biased as she is my friend!), the scarecrow and the Mayor/Captain.
Dorothy was just so sweet, and the dancing was lovely, especially the spooky scene in the dark. Not forgetting those children, beautiful.

Well done, and enjoy the rest of the week!

Kind regards

Louise Cockerill

Beauty & The Beast - a great little panto! 13 Hours, 14 Minutes ago - 04 December 2009

FMT Deliver a great little panto!

Its always nice to get a pleasant surprise - and the Felixstowe Musical Theatre production of Beauty and the Beast certainly provided one on its opening night at the Spa Pavilion.

I suppose a lot of us are a bit jaundiced when it comes to pantos . . we go for the kids, or because we know someone in the cast, and we don't expect too much. But this is one panto you can go along to see, and actually come away with a warm glow of enjoyment.

Traditionally, of course, the story and script is a touch iffy, and all the standard panto bits are slotted into place; but the production itself easily overcomes this and once past the first few moments, everyone gets in the swing and starts to enjoy themselves.

The two things that clearly stood this panto apart from others seen last year was the quality of the singing, and the quality of the production numbers. All of the musical production numbers were extremely well put together, well-staged and choreographed, and the show owes a great deal to Amanda Bond and her chorus groups, who had obviously put in enough work to get it right. The actual dancers were spot-on all the time, too, and I thought their excellent work lifted the show well above the average.

Most pantos usually suffer from a shortfall in the singing talent department, but the vocal quality of FMT's cast was outstanding.

It's always difficult to pick and choose among a strong cast, but in this instance its even more difficult because they were so uniformly good. The Beast played played by Adam Flatman was the weakest singer, but he was otherwise very competent and confident, making a good start in a principal role. Alex Shulver turned in a very well-judged performance, holding the whole show together nicely, and I was very impressed with Lee Cooper, playing the super-confident Louis.

Michelle Pountney-Langham was delivered a slick Beauty, while Richard Smith (Danni) and Daniel Keeble (Cheryl), get my vote for a pair of not-so-ugly sisters - I know a bar in Tunisia where they'd go down a storm. The Good Fairy, Jenni Hazelwood, came across as rather prim and proper, until she got the chance to belt out a number of her own, which I thought was great.

The whole musical side of the show, under M.D. Natasha Free, was seriously good - she, too, had obviously put a lot of work into this production.

So, a show from Felixstowe Musical Theatre which was good family entertainment, a lot of fun, and a really rather well staged and presented night out for everyone to enjoy.

The only disappointing part of the whole event was the size of the audience, and you can easily put that right yourself by getting along to the Spa Pavilion on Friday, Saturday or Sunday (4th, 5th, 6th Dec) and booing and hissing with everyone else. Your hands might sting a bit with applauding . . . but you'll love it!

Chris Gosling

About Beauty and the Beast - 09 September 2009

This family pantomime, written by local scriptwriters James Hayward and Lynne Mortimer, was first performed by FMT in 1996 when it proved very popular with Felixstowe audiences. The script has been updated by the writers and retains the comedy which is such an important part of pantomime.
Once again directed by Sonya Taylor, who has given us so many award winning shows, the cast of 63 has an age range including 'Panto babes' to 'Panto pensioners' who all just want to entertain you with dances, songs, fabulous costumes and sets.
